Mercedes Benz Stadium is also being built adjacent to the Georgia Dome. · Location of Olympic Centennial Park. · Downtown includes the Castleberry Hill district, which is undergoing reformation with the support of the Arthur M. It is a neighborhood that is steeped in history yet has seen its shares of troubles and decline since the 1970’s. Recent years have seen moves to revitalize the area and it is in the process of rebirth. Vine City has been undergoing reformation with the support of the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation’s Westside Neighborhood Prosperity Fund which, among other things, has created the Westside Works job training center in Vine City, funded the American Explorers youth leadership program and provided homes to police officers who move to the neighborhood. Other organizations such as the Vine City Renaissance initiative, which supports homebuyers in buying homes in the neighborhood, have also contributed to enlivening the neighborhood. · Vine City has a population that is 76% African American and housed Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King when they moved to the neighborhood in 1967. · The original location of Paschal’s restaurant (before it moved across the street in 1959) was on the Vine City side of the border with the Atlanta University Center neighborhood. Paschal’s heroically defied segregation laws in Atlanta as early as the 1950’s by seating white and black patrons together. At their second location in the Atlanta University Center neighborhood, Paschal’­s was an important meeting place for civil rights leaders and often called the “unofficial headquarters” of the civil rights movement with most movement leaders often meeting at the restaurant. Paschal’s also was pivotal in the political atmosphere of Atlanta with most Atlanta politicians visiting the restaurant to mingle with residents. Congressman John Lewis notably ate his first meal in Atlanta at Paschal’s in 1963. · Vine City was home to the original (and returning) Mims Park. Mims Park was named after former Atlanta mayor Livingston Mims and designed by Frederick Law Olmstead, the architect of such notable parks as Piedmont Park in midtown Atlanta and Central Park in New York city. Mims park contained Atlanta’s first integrated playground for children to enjoy regardless of race. Presently, Bethune Elementary School is located where the original Mims Park was located. · Mims Park is currently in the process of being resurrected in the form of Rodney Cook Sr. Park. It also includes Ebenezer Baptist church where King was pastor. · Sweet Auburn is home to one of the nation’s oldest black business districts and featured the all-black Atlanta Daily World newspaper. · The Royal Peacock Club (originally called The Top Hat Club) in Sweet Auburn was fundamental to developing Atlanta’s music scene. The two neighborhoods are thus often referenced together. · English Avenue faces many of the same challenges as Vine City and has as of late been part of many of the same reformation projects including being part of Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation’s Westside Neighborhood Prosperity Fund as well as other programs such as the Vine City Renaissance Initiative. · English Avenue is home to English Avenue Elementary School, a former all black school, which educated such notable alumni as Gladys Knight, Mable Thomas and Herman Cain. English Avenue Elementary is one of the oldest Atlanta public school buildings still in existence, even though the school is not currently operational. The Greater Vine City Opportunities Program is currently in ownership of the building and raising funds to renovate the structure into a community center which would aid in reviving the neighborhood. · English Avenue Elementary School found itself in the thick of racial tension in 1960 when a dynamite bomb was thrown from a car at the school and exploded.
